Welcome to English

The English Faculty is presently comprised of 10 dedicated individuals who strive to help Ridgeway’s students achieve the very best they can.

The emphasis within the faculty is on team work and high standards. All team members are involved in developing progressive programmes of study and promoting excellent attainment. We deliver a range of extra-curricular activities and support sessions to enable our students to reach their full potential.

At Key Stage 3, all students are taught three lessons a week of English and one lesson a week of key skills and literacy. At Key Stage 4, all students are taught five lessons a week, the focus of which varies between language, literature, coursework and exam preparation depending on the demands of the curriculum throughout the two year course. All Ridgeway students leave school with GCSE English language and most also gain an extra GCSE in English Literature.

All English teachers take pride in delivering enjoyable lessons tailored to our students’ individual needs. The OFSTED report pointed out that our team “expects nothing but the best from pupils".

The faculty occupies a designated area in the school that is centred around the Head of Faculty’s classroom. We have timetabled access to ICT rooms and 30 bookable wireless laptop computers. To facilitate high attainment, an additional suite of computers is situated in the Head of Faculty's classroom; those are solely for the English Faculty’s use.

Furthermore, all English classrooms have interactive whiteboards and are well equipped. They “present an excellent environment for learning (OFSTED)".

Our teachers’ enthusiasm for teaching and learning, our expertise in the subject, excellent professional conduct and dedication to maintaining high standards make our faculty outstanding.
