As humans, we are curious about the environment we live in. Young people in particular show considerable curiosity, finding many ways to investigate their world. Scientists are curious; they seek explanations. The scientist chooses from the knowledge and ideas that have been previously established to devise systematic studies into scientific phenomena. There are many scientific methods - scientists formulate hypotheses, design and carry out experiments, make observations and record results There is also an important place for imagination, for inspirational thinking and the receptive mind.
If the context in which science is taught is chosen carefully, we believe that our pupils can come to appreciate the relevance of the subject to everyday life. This adds interest and motivation and will lead to a deeper understanding of the importance of science in the economy and the quality of life for citizens.
It is our vision that pupils learn through active engagement in learning experiences which are outlined in the Science Faculty schemes of work.
We aim to develop the following attitudes and personal qualities are at all stages of our science:
· curiosity
· respect for evidence
· willingness to tolerate uncertainty
· critical reflection
· perseverance
· creativity and inventiveness
· open-mindedness
· sensitivity to the living and non-living environment
· co-operation with others
