Recycling at Ridgeway

Recycling at Ridgeway

This year we have implemented a new school recycling scheme in conjunction with Wirral Borough Council.

Last term we managed to recycle a whopping 18.2 tonnes (18,800kg) which is the carbon equivalent to 3 fewer flights around the world and this has all been down to the help of our Recycling Ambassadors!

The new recycling scheme consists of 90 litre grey bins, similar to those already used by the council to collect household recycling, which are filled and then emptied into larger bulk recycling bins outside and collected by the Council on a weekly basis. These smaller recycling bins have been placed in each classroom and other areas around the school, and can be used to recycle paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and cans.

In order to involve the students in the recycling scheme we have elected two students from each form group to act as Recycling Ambassadors for the school. The Recycling Ambassadors are responsible for ensuring that the correct items are being recycled in their allocated classroom bin and to ensure that the bin is emptied on a weekly basis. The Recycling Ambassadors are rewarded each term for their recycling efforts and their results are displayed each week on our LCD Display boards throughout the school.

We initially rolled out a pilot scheme in the Science Department for two weeks which proved extremely successful. The students were very enthusiastic and eager to recycle, as most of them are already very eco aware and keen to save the environment. Within the two week period the Science Department recycled an enormous 4 and a half tonnes of paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and cans! That is the carbon equivalent to one car off the road for a whole year!

The scheme is still running very effectively and we are recycling an average of 6000kg of materials each week. This means that Ridgeway is saving over 100 trees from being cut down each week which is fantastic!

However we will not stop at simply recycling materials that would otherwise go to waste. We are striving to reduce Ridgeway High School’s carbon footprint even further and we will keep you updated with our progress.
