Last academic year Ridgeway made a huge step in becoming a greener school through our new school recycling scheme in conjunction with Wirral Borough Council.
The scheme has been extremely successful and from September 2008 to July 2009 we managed to recycle a whopping 150 tonnes (150,000kg) which is the carbon equivalent to 30 fewer flights around the world!
We could not have achieved this without the help of our students and staff and in particular to our Recycling Ambassadors that work extremely hard each week to ensure that the recycling bins are emptied and pro actively help to find new ways of making the school a greener place to be. The Recycling Ambassadors are rewarded each term for their recycling efforts and their results are displayed each week on our internal LCD boards. We strive to keep students and staff eco-aware by generating a Recycling Fact of the Week which is displayed here on our website and on the LCD boards throughout the school.
We also endeavour to celebrate different recycling events throughout the year such as World Environment Day and Green Britain Day. Click here to see the results of our 'Rag Bag' recycling event 2010.
We are hoping to become an even greener school in the future by using more recycled products such as paper and pens and striving to reduce our waste as well as recycling it.
Keep checking the website for more updates on what we have been doing to help combat climate change.
On Thursday 25th March some of our Recycling Ambassadors attended 'The School Environment Awards' ceremony at the Pacific Road Arts Centre, where they took home two awards for Ridgeway. The 'Biffa Schools Recycling Award' and the 'Mayor's Outstanding Contribution Award'.
Our Recycling Ambassadors received the 'Biffa Schools Recycling Award' because of all the hard work that they have put in over the last year to ensure that our school recycling scheme runs efficiently. The students received a fantastic trophy and a cheque from Biffa in the amount of £200 to use towards a school environment scheme.
Ridgeway also won the 'Mayor's Outstanding Contribution Award' for all the hard work that has been put in to implement and maintain the school recycling scheme over the past two years. We recieved another fantastic trophy and Miss Cross, our Recycling Co-ordinator, received some high street vouchers.
Well done to all our Recycling Ambassadors and everyone at Ridgeway for helping us to achieve these awards.
