Year 9 Qualification - Key Steps Award

What is it?

The Key Steps Award is a programme of activities in a range of topic areas covering Citizenship, PSHE, Environment Education, Personal Finance Education, Enterprise andInternationalism. These are the topic areas you will be studying in your Learning for Life lessons.

Structure

The Key Steps Award Book comprises 9 modules. You must complete 30-35 hours of Personal Challenges to achieve the Key Steps certificate. Most of your challenges will be completed during Learning for Life lessons and as homework, although some may be delivered on Intensive Study Days.
Personal Challenges can be selected from any of the nine modules:

  • Identity
  • Community
  • Health
  • Citizenship
  • Environment
  • Personal Finance
  • Enterprise
  • Values
  • International

Personal Challenges are carried out in 3 steps:

  • PLAN
  • CARRY OUT
  • REVIEW

By completing Personal Challenges, you must demonstrate the following Key Skills:

  • Working well with others
  • Improving your own learning
  • Problem Solving
  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • ICT
  • Assessment

Evidence of all the Personal Challenges you complete is collated in a Portfolio of Evidence, along with your Award Book and recording documents (Action Plans, Reviews and Summaries of Skills Achievements).

Progression

If you are successful in completing the Key Steps Award, you may use it as 2 credits towards the 12 needed to gain the CoPE (Certificate of Personal Effectiveness) qualification you will work towards in Years 9-11.
